Restoration Update

Thompson TK 1623

At the Working Weekend on January 29th / 30th, two more corridor windows were fitted. This entails applying mastic sealant to bed in the pane against the metal frame. Then the wooden surrounds which hold the pane against the frame have mastic tape applied, and are then screwed in against the pane with considerable force. The compartment windows will be fitted latter. It was thought we would have to lift in the seats through the compartment window spaces, but a trial run with one bench seat has shown it can be done through a door then carried into the compartment.

Sanding of the corridor screens above the compartment doors has also continued. Some of it is original but in poor condition, with damaged varnish. In places, BR splattered blue paint over much woodwork when the coach was transformed for Departmental use with the Civil Engineer. All of this paint has to be removed, prior to staining (where necessary) and re-varnishing.

A trip to the Bellwood site at Grosmont shed was made in order to retrieve a luggage rack from Thompson CK 18477 which can be used as a pattern to have a set made for 1623. BR removed them all when 1623 coach was departmentalised. As the coach is tarpaulin covered, this job was undertaken by torchlight! Finally, 1623's battery box painting has been completed, with touch up with black paint undertaken to finish off the whole job.

Fish Van 75169

The major development has seen the new headstock offered up to the van frames to see if it fits - it does! This is prior to welding on. Before that, it is to be drilled by a fitter at Grosmont shed - all the holes are being marked out where various bolts are fitted. The buffer housings and mounting blocks have been needle-gunned, primed, undercoated and top coated. The brake handle is receiving similar treatment. Finally, much of the braking system rods and levers have been removed, and were needle-gunned preparatory to the full painting spec.

Gresley TK 23896

Our Archivist has stopped the rain getting in by putting new plywood up against several door windows, the originals of which had disintegrated. Much removal of debris has also been completed. This carriage, parked at the end of the yard by High Mill crossing, will follow 1623 into the new shed in due course.

On-line fund-raising schemes

We have just launched several new schemes to help raise restoration funds on-line for the LNER Carriage Association on-line, with just few extra clicks. The new on-line fund raising schemes consist of two web shopping portals and two search engine schemes, and by using these schemes you can help raise money for us, without it costing you a penny!

Shopping Portals

The two shopping portals are buy.at and easyfundraising.co.uk. If you shop on-line, using either of these portals, then for every purchase you make, we receive commission on that purchase, whilst you pay the same amount as you would have, if you had made the purchase direct!

On-line shops available through the Buy At scheme include Amazon, Asda, CD Wow, E.on, Hertz, Ikea, More Than, National Lottery, Premier Inn, and many more. The complete list of participating stores, and what commission they offer, can be viewed on the site. This scheme doesn't even require you to register, all you have to do is go to http://buy.at/lnerca , and start shopping!!

On-line shops available through the Easyfundraising scheme include AA Travel Insurance, Argos, Blockbuster, iTunes, More Than, The Trainline, Thomas Cook, WH Smiths and Wickes. The complete list of participating stores can be viewed here . To use this scheme, you do need to register first, a process that only takes a few minutes and can be done here .

Search Engine Schemes

The two search engine schemes are www.everyclick.com and www.easysearch.org.uk . These schemes work by the web company donating some of the money they receive from advertising fees, for each search that is completed using the search portal.
