Emergency Control Trains article

Seven of the ex LNER Gresley coaches which are based on the NYMR / in the care of the LNERCA, are survivors from the ER Emergency Control trains. An article on these trains and their coaches was published in the June 1981 issue of Railway World, and this article has now been uploaded to this website. It can be found here .

Restoration Update

At the April working weekend, April 16 / 17th, there was another good turn out and the following work was undertaken:

Thompson TK 1623

Sunglasses needed! The two days saw the roof painted with white 'Decadex' - a water-repellent paint. It is a two-part process requiring the application of a primer coat, then, 24 hours later, the top coat. What a transformation! The use of the safety harness once again came into its own to allow the roof to be painted, with the sides of the roof being treated from the mobile scaffolding.

Our joiner has made many of the compartment mouldings and these were trial fitted and cut to size, preparatory to staining and varnishing.Further staining of the sanded compartment partitions/screens was completed and the stained and varnished corridor is gradually taking shape. Soon the corridor ceiling will be next in line - to be painted white.

Not strictly 1623, but as so many volunteers turned up, three of them set to and began stripping the layers of paint from sliding widows which will be used in Restaurant Car 23890. These will then be chromed.

Painting the roof with Decadex

Eyes white! After hoovering the roof to remove large quantities of accumulated dust, the 'Decadex' paint is applied. 1623 will receive a second coat once all the roof furniture has been fitted.

Fish Van 75169

It is pleasing to report that restoration of this unique item of rolling stock is coming on leaps and bounds. All of the brakework has been stripped off the underframe, derusted, primed, undercoated and top coated. Some more sections of the vehicle's underframe was painted now that it is accessible.

The new headstock was pre-drilled and then taken to Grosmont MPD by the C&W staff during a trip to undertake Fitness to Run exams on the Mk. 1 carriages. The MPD has a 2.5-inch drill which is the size needed for the buffer shanks. On its return, it was offered up for trial fitting and the newly fabricated central section (previously scrapped due to corrosion) was cut and ground to the required size. The headstock is now ready to be welded onto the actual underframe assembly - the paid staff's Dave Jakeman, a coded welder, will be doing this job. Thoughts will then turn to the other end of the van for a repeat performance - cutting out corroded sections and machining another headstock from new channel.

Finally, the remaining wooden framing still extant at the unrebuilt end has been measured to allow new hard wood to be procured at the end which has the first new headstock.

Sponsor a luggage rack bracket

We are now in the final stages of restoring Thompson corridor third 1623 - and the final stages are where it starts to get expensive! We have most of the remaining fixtures and fittings in stock or on order, the last big item being the luggage rack brackets. We don't have any of these, so new ones will have to be cast, chrome plated and fitted with nets. In these coaches they were actually combined luggage and hat racks, with a broad upper rack for luggage and a lower, narrower rack for hats, which were of course worn by almost everyone when 1623 was built. There are eight brackets per compartment (four per rack), and at around £50 each and with seven compartments to equip that is around £3000 we have to find.

Luggage rack bracket

We have therefore launched a "Sponsor a Luggage Rack" scheme, seeking people to sponsor individual brackets for £50 each. Anyone who sponsors a bracket will be invited to travel in the seat nearest to "their" bracket on the official inaugural run of the coach.

Please make your cheque for £50 payable to the LNERCA and send it to the LNERCA Treasurer at 103 Bramley Garth, Appletree Village, York, YO31 0PQ, or use the Paypal purchase facility in the shop section of this website. If you are a UK taxpayer, please don't forget to fill in a Gift Aid form!

On-line fund-raising schemes

We have just launched several new schemes to help raise restoration funds on-line for the LNER Carriage Association on-line, with just few extra clicks. The new on-line fund raising schemes consist of two web shopping portals and two search engine schemes, and by using these schemes you can help raise money for us, without it costing you a penny!

Shopping Portals

The two shopping portals are buy.at and easyfundraising.co.uk. If you shop on-line, using either of these portals, then for every purchase you make, we receive commission on that purchase, whilst you pay the same amount as you would have, if you had made the purchase direct!

On-line shops available through the Buy At scheme include Amazon, Asda, CD Wow, E.on, Hertz, Ikea, More Than, National Lottery, Premier Inn, and many more. The complete list of participating stores, and what commission they offer, can be viewed on the site. This scheme doesn't even require you to register, all you have to do is go to http://buy.at/lnerca , and start shopping!!

On-line shops available through the Easyfundraising scheme include AA Travel Insurance, Argos, Blockbuster, iTunes, More Than, The Trainline, Thomas Cook, WH Smiths and Wickes. The complete list of participating stores can be viewed here . To use this scheme, you do need to register first, a process that only takes a few minutes and can be done here .

Search Engine Schemes

The two search engine schemes are www.everyclick.com and www.easysearch.org.uk . These schemes work by the web company donating some of the money they receive from advertising fees, for each search that is completed using the search portal.
