Restoration Update

At the May / June working week, there was another good turn out and the following work was undertaken:

Thompson TK 1623

There has been some major progress on 1623 during the recent Coach Week, with a good turnout (John Boddy, Murray Brown, Andrew Daniel, Malcolm Brown, Gary Lyne, Roger Melton, Dave Cullingworth, Gordon Wells and new volunteer Mat Dews all in attendance)- apologies if I have forgotten anyone. On the roof all the gutters are now fitted as are the cornices that run down the side and seal along the top of the steel panels and the edge of the roof. There are a couple of vents that need fitting on the roof over the water tanks, and then after putting flexitape over the gutters and application of 2 coats of Decadex the roof will be largely complete.

Murray Brown is seen busy fixing one of the cornices to 1623

On the interior work has concentrated on fitting the small mouldings that cover the joints in the formica panels. These are all then painted to match the cream coloured formica ceilings. The corridor cornice is now all fitted, stained and had a coat of varnish. The corridor screen has now all been repaired; all the glue and remaining paint has been scraped off and sanded prior to a coat of dark indian rosewood stain. This area is now being varnished and the interior is starting to look very impressive now. We are now about to place an order for the moquette (that will also be used on CK 18477 and CL 88339) and this will be a major drain on our finances. We have committed to get 1623 externally completed for the Autumn so it can be moved into the main shed for Carriage and Wagon to do the mechanical overhaul. The remaining interior work should be completed to allow the coach to enter traffic during summer 2012 if all goes to plan!

Gresley 23890

This coach has been purchased by LNERCA, and following a very generous donation, has been moved into the yard at Pickering to allow work to recommence on it. Most work on this project will be carried out by contractors, to ensure that progress on 1623 is not affected. Once repairs to the bodywork have been completed, work will commence on the interior, and eventually the kitchen in 43654 will be transferred into 23890.

A Month In the Country

This film was filmed in 1986, and the first 10 minutes feature footage shot on the NYMR, with several of the LNERCA carriages featuring. The film company used 2 sets. The 'branch' set was hauled by 6619 and formed of the CL and a H&B (the CL used for internal footage). The 'main line' set was hauled by the K1 and featured RB641, BTO43567 and BT3641 (now at Mangapps). These 3 carriages were all painted maroon and 'tarted up' before filming, which included having some plywood panels replaced on 43567, and a new roof sheet fitted to BT3641. Thanks to Dave Cullingworth for this info, and for finding the film clip below.

Sponsor a luggage rack bracket

We are now in the final stages of restoring Thompson corridor third 1623 - and the final stages are where it starts to get expensive! We have most of the remaining fixtures and fittings in stock or on order, the last big item being the luggage rack brackets. We don't have any of these, so new ones will have to be cast, chrome plated and fitted with nets. In these coaches they were actually combined luggage and hat racks, with a broad upper rack for luggage and a lower, narrower rack for hats, which were of course worn by almost everyone when 1623 was built. There are eight brackets per compartment (four per rack), and at around £50 each and with seven compartments to equip that is around £3000 we have to find.

Luggage rack bracket

We have therefore launched a "Sponsor a Luggage Rack" scheme, seeking people to sponsor individual brackets for £50 each. Anyone who sponsors a bracket will be invited to travel in the seat nearest to "their" bracket on the official inaugural run of the coach.

Please make your cheque for £50 payable to the LNERCA and send it to the LNERCA Treasurer at 103 Bramley Garth, Appletree Village, York, YO31 0PQ, or use the Paypal purchase facility in the shop section of this website. If you are a UK taxpayer, please don't forget to fill in a Gift Aid form!

On-line fund-raising schemes

We have just launched several new schemes to help raise restoration funds on-line for the LNER Carriage Association on-line, with just few extra clicks. The new on-line fund raising schemes consist of two web shopping portals and two search engine schemes, and by using these schemes you can help raise money for us, without it costing you a penny!

Shopping Portals

The two shopping portals are buy.at and easyfundraising.co.uk. If you shop on-line, using either of these portals, then for every purchase you make, we receive commission on that purchase, whilst you pay the same amount as you would have, if you had made the purchase direct!

On-line shops available through the Buy At scheme include Amazon, Asda, CD Wow, E.on, Hertz, Ikea, More Than, National Lottery, Premier Inn, and many more. The complete list of participating stores, and what commission they offer, can be viewed on the site. This scheme doesn't even require you to register, all you have to do is go to http://buy.at/lnerca , and start shopping!!

On-line shops available through the Easyfundraising scheme include AA Travel Insurance, Argos, Blockbuster, iTunes, More Than, The Trainline, Thomas Cook, WH Smiths and Wickes. The complete list of participating stores can be viewed here . To use this scheme, you do need to register first, a process that only takes a few minutes and can be done here .

Search Engine Schemes

The two search engine schemes are www.everyclick.com and www.easysearch.org.uk . These schemes work by the web company donating some of the money they receive from advertising fees, for each search that is completed using the search portal.
