Latest News - 19th November 2008

Steady progress continues to be made on Thompson TK1623. Work has recently included the derusting and and painting as much of the underframe as possible, leaving only the inaccessible areas, which will be painted when the coach is lifted off of its bogies. Another recent task has been the replacement of the body mounting bolts, which join the body to the main frame. These have a metal plate which sits under each bolt, and these plates have had to be specially made.

A working party weekend was organised over the weekend of the 15th and 16th November, with a good turnout of volunteers over the whole weekend. The main work carried out, involved the removal of rotten or damaged floorboards from the compartments and the laying of new boards in the corridor. By the end of the weekend, boards had been laid about 2/3 of the way along the corridor from the South end, and it is hoped that the remainder of the corridor boards can be laid before Christmas.

Other work carried out over the weekend, included removing the securing screws from the one steel panel which wasn't removed for the recent frame repairs, and replacing them with stainless steel screws. This sounds simple, but first the old screws had to be located under the paint, then removed and the dimples cleaned and prepared before each new stainless steel screw can be screwed into place. The two steel side panels which were scumbled in a teak finish a few years ago, were both sanded down, and the lower door panels for all four of the doors were removed from storage, cleaned up and painted in preparation of refitting to the doors.

The one other task completed over the weekend, was the moving inside the new shed of the 6 new steel side panels for Thompson CK18477, which is currently stored at Grosmont awaiting restoration. Despite the panels having been outside for the best part of twenty years, they are still in good condition, and in the main are only suffering from surface rust.

It is hoped that these working weekends can be carried out on a regular once a month basis - watch this website for future dates.
